Short version every night during the night baby woke up screaming except on non gluten days.
It took me a while and some experimenting but baby’s gluten issues started when he was able to handle digesting wheat based pasta. But in the night he woke up screaming in pain stretching out his whole body stiff and doing man sized farts. Now when he passes gas it’s without crying and pain. It’s just normal. I had colic suggested but it did not make sense because it was only some days. I removed gluten for a week. Improving on day one. Then I tried pasta and the issues returned full force. He also would get constipated too fast with gluten.
Both my husband and I are mildly lactose intolerant and baby has showed signs of being the same and he is weaning onto lactose free formula. All the formula he tried made him vomit and caused pain leading to a very extreme bottle aversion taking me months to overcome it. He had colic like symptoms but I was more sure it was an issue with either lactose or caesin. He will now drink his formula but he does not vomit, have reflux, painful gas or painful stools either conscription or diarrhoea. His cheeks were often frequently red which I found later is a common symptom. He is still slowly weaning to a bottle but without screaming at the sight of it and has made some yummy I like this noises which is good.
My doctors would not listen thinking I have first baby itis. But my Aunty who lives with us is an ex nurse and she agreed something was wrong with his extreme and too frequent gas that often caused him pain. Now he is a happy again and does not suffer when toileting or passing gas and the frequency is more normal as well as the volume. I am lucky she was an ex nurse that did a lot of maternity because she listened and helped me find what was right and encouraged me to trust my instincts. He gets better sleeps. On gluten he woke up every 30mins To every hour in pain. My husband has ibs and gluten is the trigger and he says it’s very painful. Baby possibly has the same. Now he sleeps very well with the exception of teething of course. His symptoms only appeared when he was consuming either or both gluten or lactose. Now he is off of those triggers his overall mood is better and his sleeping and naps are excellent.
Now more than ever I make a lot of his foods myself or I buy specifically gluten free food for him. I am also glad I have my own pasta maker as he loves pasta and making gluten free pasta isn’t very hard and usually tastes better handmade than store bought. In the past I have had trouble with gluten free pasta turning to mush.
What this means for this blog is that most of the recipes from this point will be gluten and lactose free. They may contain meat as baby loves meat. I don’t often eat much meat but I craved it constantly pregnant and he loves it just as much since he started solids. I will mention which recipes are vegan or non vegan or how to make it vegan just for the option.
