Food Dehydrator & Baby Food

One thing I’ve been wanting to make for easy baby food is dehydrating my own fruit and vegetable powder. Even though he’s getting older and he’s almost ready for finger food it’s not too late to make fruit and vegetable powder but it also means that I can make dehydrated fruit or vegetable chips. Apple chips happen to be the easiest and usually well received. But you don’t have to dehydrate them until they are hard chips you could also dehydrate them into soft Apple chews and they store well for a long time. You also get the benefit of knowing exactly what’s in it and how it was made. But those are a while away yet. He needs to be a little older and have some more teeth first. But it’s something to consider.

Last year for my birthday I was given a blueberry bush. It grew a handful of blueberries since it was pre-grown and in a container. Now after the frost it looks as though it’s going to grow at least 1 to 2 store bought punnets worth of blueberries. But as time goes on and it grows bigger and there’s more fruit we will eventually have more than what I will know what to do with. This is where dehydrating blueberries and making blueberry powder becomes a useful way to store food and not let anything go to waste. Blueberry power can be used in many ways and many things but dehydrated blueberries on their own can be added to many things such as porridge and smoothies, cakes and muffins and much more. My personal favourite is throwing them in porridge.

If for some reason the powders go off, Or become mouldy, they can be added to my composting worm farm. I have what in Australia is called a worm cafe where it has red wiggler worms and they eat food scraps in a multi tier system. Since buying the setup I have considered buying a box of Dr Worms which has several breeds of composting worms. It helps to make composting food scraps more efficient and in a more eco friendly way. Sometimes removing the moisture and giving dried food can benefit the worm farm. After which you can use the worm castings and what’s called worm tea in the garden and in fruit and veg gardens as well.

After recovering from my CSection I have gotten back into gardening. I currently do light gardening and soon I will be ready to grow some vegetables and strawberries. If I succeed with strawberries which is one of bubs favourite fruits, I can also turn them into powder form and add it to his breakfast porridges and smoothies for everyone else. I have not been able to update much but recently with baby gaining two teeth and starting some finger foods my cooking ideas have started coming to me when I am trying to get back to sleep during the night. I’ve always been a terrible sleeper but more so with a teething baby. Soon I’ll have to start a notebook and keep it beside the bed.
